Is the left hand talking to the right?  Not when it comes to our  dysfunctional food safety system.

Federal inspectors are flooding into Iowa to try to figure out the cause of a half-billion eggs recalled for Salmonella.   Sure – now they are.  But until this point regulators paid little attention to either of the two egg farms now involved in the massive recall, despite the fact that one of them, Wright County Eggs, has a history of health and safety violations.

The problem lies within a fractioned system where dozens of federal, state and local agencies share responsibility for different parts of our food safety system, especially when it comes to eggs.

CU’s Ami Gadhia was featured on NPR setting the record straight on who-does-what.

“FDA has the authority over shell eggs that you buy in those cartons at the grocery store,” she says. But for the chickens themselves and the eggs that are cracked open before shipping — “That is under the jurisdiction of USDA,”

Complicating it further, the food processed into egg-containing products, like cookies, cakes and lasagna, are regulated, again, by the FDA.
